PS3 chip details emerge
Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at 18:50 by Laurence Norah
Details of the processor that will be powering Sony's next generation gaming console have been released in a press release issued jointly by Sony, IBM and Toshiba. Code-named Cell, the multicore processor is already shaping up to be a seriously fast piece of processing power.

Initially intended to be used inside a graphical workstation, the Cell chip has been revealed to have multiple future applications, including powering high definition television (HDTV) sets, not to mention powering the Playstation 3.

Key features that have been revealed about the chip so far are as follows:

Multicore processor comprising a 64-bit Power processor core and multiple synergistic processor cores (yes, we liked their marketing speak as well).
Support for multiple operating systems.
Substantial bus bandwidth to/from main memory, as well as companion chips.
Flexible on-chip I/O (input/output) interface.
Real-time resource management system for real-time applications.
On-chip hardware in support of security system for intellectual property protection.
Implemented in 90 nanometer (nm) silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology.

Detailed technical information on the Cell is due to be released in a series of four technical papers, which will be presented at the International Solid State Circuits Conference in February 2005.

Mr. Masashi Muromachi, Corporate Vice President of Toshiba Corporation and President & CEO of Toshiba's Semiconductor Company, had the following to say about Cell

The progressive breakdown of barriers between personal computers and digital consumer electronics requires dramatic enhancements in the capabilities and performance of consumer electronics. The Cell processor meets these requirements with a multi-processor architecture/design and a structure able to support high-level media processing. Development of this unsurpassed, high-performance processor is well under way, carried forward by dedicated teamwork and state-of-the-art expertise from Toshiba, Sony Group and IBM

Today's announcement shows the substantial progress that has been made in this joint program. Cell will substantially enhance the performance of broadband-empowered consumer applications, raise the user-friendliness of services realized through these applications, and facilitate the use of information-rich media and communications.

IBM are expected to start pilot production of Cell during the first half of 2005, whilst Sony are believed to be launching their Cell based Playstation 3 during 2006.
