Kazaa give users free phone calls
Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at 13:58 by Kathleen Hill
Sharman Networks, the firm behind the infamous file sharing software Kazaa, have today launched v3 of their software which enables users to make free online telephone calls anywhere in the world.

Kazaa v3 comes with built in Internet telephony software Skype.

Skype allows Internet users to call other Internet users, anywhere in the world, for free.

The launch of Kazaa v3 provides a platform for Sharman Networks to showcase its future vision of P2P. The Kazaa product now goes beyond just file sharing and music downloads to become a simple and reliable tool for communicating and sharing information with friends, family and colleagues.

Kazaa is currently the only file sharing application to offer free peer-to-peer Internet calls.

Nikki Hemming, co-founder of Sharman Networks said,

"Internet telephony is a new frontier in P2P communications and a rapidly growing market. The inclusion of Skype is a natural extension of the Kazaa product and of peer-to-peer. As pioneers in the P2P field, Sharman Networks believes the integration of Skype - considered the best product in the market for Internet phone calls - will deliver powerful consumer benefits."

There have been over 300 million downloads of the popular Kazaa application to date.

Get Kazaa Lite, and download Skype separately. Skip the bundled spyware.

Here is something even easier: http://www.theswitchboard.ca This is an internet phone which requires no download or installation. All you need is a browser with Java 1.4 (or greater) and you are set. It works on Mac, Windows, and Linux. The Switchboard is P2P and goes through routers and firewalls with no configuration. Unlike Skype, The Switchboard does not leave dialup users behind. If you select low bandwidth mode it will work over an average dialup connection. Another cool feature is a server side voicemail box, in which your contacts can leave voice messages for you even if you aren't online.
