| Telewest crank up the speeds |
| Friday, November 12, 2004 at 11:56 by Laurence Norah |
Telewest have decided that ntl's recent speed increases for their customers is something they need to do something about, so they have gone one better and pushed their maximum package up to a fairly stunning 4Mb. Stunning for the UK anyway.
Telewest are upgrading users across the board, and unlike ntl are not planning on charging users any kind of administration fees for doing so. The increases are looking to be as follows:
The 3Mb service, priced at £50 per month, will now increase to an impressive 4Mb. Telewest are also increasing the upload speed on this service to 348k, something users have been asking for for some time.
The 1.5Mb service will have an increase to 2Mb, at a cost of £35 a month. No increase in the upstream speed is planned.
The 750k service will be increased to 1Mb, although again no upstream increase is planned. This will continue to cost £25 a month.
The entry level package at 256k per month will not change at all, and will remain at £17.99 a month. This is the only package that still seems quite expensive compared to other forms of broadband.
Telewest have announced that the upgrades to their network will take place between December and January, and the speed increases will take effect shortly after.
It's also worth mentioning that Telewest are committed to keeping their services uncapped, so when you have your 4Mb service you can download what you like without worrying about bandwidth restrictions. Once again these speeds make the standard ADSL fare look a little poor, although in favour of ADSL it does have a great deal more coverage.
BT seem to be focusing on providing a wider range of slower wholesale packages with various capping and pricing structures in place, whilst pretty much ignoring the faster end of the spectrum. Providers like ntl and Telewest are therefore perfectly placed to exploit this end of the market, but it appears that they are doing so in a way that benefits the end user. If there are any further developments in this ongoing speed battle, we'll let you know.
