IBM build world's fastest computer
Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at 23:40 by Rich Kavanagh
Computer giant IBM have developed the world's fastest super computer.

Named Blue Gene/L, IBM's latest creation is 1/20th the size of existing machines of comparable power and uses 28 times less power.

Blue Gene/L comprises of some 8,000 PowerPC processors packed into just four refrigerator-sized racks.

Running at 36.01 teraflops (one trillion calculations per second), Blue Gene/L beats the record of 35.86 teraflops which was held by Japan's Earth Simulator.

Dave Turek at IBM said,

"By giving our clients access to innovative, affordable and flexible supercomputing power like Blue Gene and the Deep Computing Capacity on Demand Center, we are providing new resources to drive breakthroughs in business, science and industry. Whether we are talking about improving the accuracy of weather forecasts, designing better automobiles or improving disease research, we are seeing the advent of a new supercomputing age."

It is only a matter of time before Blue Gene/L is number one on the Top 500 list of super computers. The next publication of the Top 500 is due next month, it is unlikely Blue Gene/L will make that list in time.

Still, you can't beat grid-computing.
