Further PSP specs revealed
Thursday, August 26, 2004 at 18:33 by Laurence Norah
Speaking at the Hot Chips Conference at Stamford University this week a Sony spokesperson has outlined further details of their upcoming Playstation Portable (PSP) handheld gaming console. Clearly designed to go head to head with the upcoming Nintendo DS in a market that has traditionally been dominated by Nintendo, the Sony device has some very interesting features.

Central to the system is the CPU, which will be a MIPS R4000 capable of speeds up to 333MHz. That should be enough to handle most multimedia applications, including video playback. The graphics core is expected to run at half the CPU speed, around 166Mhz, which Sony say will provide a 35 million polygon per second capability. Also expect to see alpha blending, fogging and texture mapping, as well as a whole host of other graphical capabilities. Not bad for a device you can hold in your hand.

The PSP is also going to have 4MB of integrated memory, half of which will be dedicated to the media processor, and the other half to the CPU. Previous reports of the PSP showed a total of 8MB of memory, so this announcement of half that has come as a surprise to some.

Sony are also keen to push the fact that the PSP integrates what they are calling their Virtual Media Engine (VME). This is a reconfigurable core which allows the main chip to offload calculations when it's workload becomes high.

Well, it's certainly going to be an exciting year for portable gaming consoles when the Nintendo DS and the PSP come out. Will Sony be able to usurp Nintendo from one of it's strongest markets? With specs like these, we certainly think they may be able to. We'll keep you posted.

My money is still on the DS. PSP hasn't proven a thing in terms of offering something new and innovative to videogames as we know it. Thank you Nintendo for having balls and doing something new (DS).

I think it is too early to tell yet, so don't be too hasty to pre-judge. Just because Nintendo is a veteran in the hand held market and hasn't really had any stiff competition.

Sega offered a better system, more colors, better screen and more advances graphics and the Gameboy still kicked its butt.

Yeah i agree Sega did offer much a much better handheld im sorry to see that they are a software company but as for DS to PSP ds has nothing it only has N64 grphics while the PSP has PS2 graphics, GPS, Camera attachment, you can watch movies in UMD format and listen to music in UMD format. Like how can you say a system with 2 screens is better then PSP well you cant.

There is absolutely no question about it. The PSP is going to kick the DS's a$$. Let's see, would i rather get a boring, unattractive piece of junk with two dinky little screens, or would i want to get the mother of all handhelds, namely the PSP? Just to give some numbers, the PSP has 81,408 more pixels on its screen than the DS. For those who say that Sony isn't introducing a revolutionary new idea into the world of videogames, am i right in saying that the DS will also have GPS support? It's obviously can't be hard to see where you're going on such a huge screen that the DS provides, and you also may get a very helpful topographical map on the other enormous screen that gives you the distance above water level of the location miles ahead of you. Yeah right. Oh yeah, and i bet it'll be simple to watch movies on such a large screen as well. And as for the touch screen, here's how it's gonna go down... You're playing a crazy action game, lets just say Red Faction (if you have good enough eyes to see what you're doing), and you're running around shooting people on a crappy little D-pad. All of a sudden, you need to do something on the lower screen, so you take your eyes off the top screen, fumble to find the stylus, do whatever needs to be done, put the stylus back, and look back up at the top screen, just to discover that you've been killed in the chaos. Sounds like fun, huh? Also. I hear the DS boasts a 3D graphics system. Wow, nintendo, you've really gone all out for this one, haven't you? I think i've put my point across, so thanks for listening (reading).
