XBox and PS2 price cuts announced
Thursday, August 19, 2004 at 18:06 by Laurence Norah
In great news for gamers on the lead up to Christmas (it's only four months away!) both Sony and Microsoft have announced price cuts on their gaming consoles in the UK.

As of today, the Sony Playstation 2 console will retail in the UK for a mere £104.99. Commenting on the price change, David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said:

PlayStation 2 has enjoyed phenomenal success, and the time has now come to go well beyond our 24 million PAL PlayStation 2 owners. There are already over 1,000 games titles available, and many more new ones like Gran Turismo 4, The Getaway: Black Monday, Singstar Party, EyeToy Play 2 and Killzone, all to be published by SCEE, and titles such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas from Take 2 and Burnout 3: Takedown from Electronic Arts still to come this year..

Microsoft also chose to announce a price drop in their Xbox console today, to £99.99, although it won't come into effect until the 27th of August. Sony's price cut is effective today.

Competition in the already highly competitive console market is once again heating up it seems. No news yet from Nintendo as to whether they will be dropping the Gamecube's price, but they are already very competitvely priced in the UK as it is. A cynic may argue that both companies are trying to get rid of stock before the next generation consoles come along some time next year. Still, price drops are all good for the consumer. We'll let you know if Nintendo follow suit.

99.99 GBP is great value although if you shopped around you could have got a brand new one for £100 for the past 18 months. MS make a loss of around $100 per console sold and only make it up when you buy around 5 new games and or sign up to Xbox live for 40 GBP
