Rock band U2 are suspected to be launching their upcoming album on the Internet, available for purchase and download via the popular iTunes service.
The band said a CD went missing recently that contains unfinished songs from their new album. If the songs were to end up on the Internet, the band would publish the completed album on iTunes in a bid to put people off downloading incomplete material.
Interscope Records, the recording label behind U2, said they were not going to alter the November launch date of the album. A spokesperson said,
"The iTunes release is certainly one of the alternatives, should an unauthorized version appear on free file-sharing services."
Edge, the lead guitarist for the band said in a statement,
"It doesn't seem credible. A large slice of two years work lifted via a piece of round plastic. It doesn't seem credible but that's what's just happened to us...and it was my CD."
The CD went missing during a photo shoot in France last week.
