The Official Chart Company (OCC) have announced the pending launch of a new type of music chart.
Instead of charting songs that are being bought in the shops, the new Top 40 will be for songs that get purchased on the Internet and downloaded.
Kicking off on September 1, the OCC said the new type of Top 40 chart has come about due to a "huge interest".
The last few months have seen nothing short of an explosion in the European music download scene with firms like Coca-Cola launching MyCokeMusic and Apple launching iTunes.
A spokesperson for the OCC said,
"We wanted the new chart to be as wide and broad as possible and were considering widening the number of services that sales data was taken from. We really want to have as many key players as possible as long as they are legal and recognised by the UK music industry.
We want it to be a real barometer of the most frequently downloaded music in the UK."
The creation of the music download Top 40 chart is to be "the most significant development in the charts since the advent of the compact disc 20 years ago", said OCC director, Omar Maskatiya.
