Man arrested for Google extortion attempt
Friday, June 25, 2004 at 19:30 by Rich Kavanagh
A man from California has been charged with extortion after claiming he had a software program that could defraud Internet search engine firm Google of millions of dollars.

Michael Bradley of Oak Park, California has been charged with ten counts of wire fraud and one count of interfering with commerce by threats.

The software program he wrote was specifically written to target Google's "cost-per-click" AdSense marketing tool. The software would effectively create "false clicks", something which Google would have to pay web site operators for.

Not getting too far in selling his software program, Michael Bradley took it upon himself to try and blackmail Google with it, claiming he would sell the software to spam organisations if Google did not pay him $150,000.

Pleading not guilty, Bradley has been bailed for $50,000.
