NTL, the UK cable company and broadband supplier to over 1 million customers, have announced that they will be partnering with the music download service Napster to provide their customers access to Napster's download catalogue.
Napster will be offered to ntl's customers as both a package deal as part of ntl's "Broadband Plus" content package, and also as a standalone product download.
The Broadband Plus package currently costs GBP3.99 a month, when you add Napster to that it will cost GBP9.95 a month. Broadband Plus is currently available to ntl's 600k and 1Mbps home users. A quick look at that service on the ntl site shows that it already comes with OD2's new SonicSelector service, reported upon here. How well these two services will work together remains to be seen.
Napster, launched recently in the UK, has an extensive music catalogue with tracks available from as little as 88p, and full albums from GBP9.95. They have had over five million music downloads world-wide since they launched.
This partnership will be good news for Napster who will be trying to attract as many subscribers as possible before Apple launch their iTunes service in Europe. How much effect that launch will have on other music services is yet to be seen, but the more competition the market has, the better for the consumer.
