BlackBerry patent row could mean ban
Monday, June 07, 2004 at 11:41 by Rich Kavanagh
A patent issue over the popular BlackBerry handheld e-mail devices is currently being battled out in US courts.

It started back in August 2003 when NTP Inc started proceedings against Research in Motion (RIM), the BlackBerry manufacturers.

The ensuing legal battle saw NTP demanding sums of over $53 million dollars in damages for patent infringement and NTP also demanded an injunction against RIM to prevent further devices being made in the US.

RIM appealed against the injunction and the case re-appears today at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington.

A lawyer representing NTP said,

"RIM are engaging in 'bet your company' litigation. What's at stake is the entire company. If you look at their annual reports, their core business is BlackBerries in the United States."

As ever, we will keep you posted with details of the case.
