British Telecom is the first ISP in the UK to take the bold step of blocking access to illegal child pornography on the internet. BT Chairman, Sir Christopher Bland gave the move his backing at a board meeting last month for the project known as "Cleanfeed" to proceed.
The project has been developed with the UK Home Office and will hopefully be going live by the end of the month and will only affect subscribers to BTYahoo.
When users attempt to access an illegal page, instead of the site being displayed they will receive an error message saying the page is unavailable. BT will be recording the number of hits to the blocked sites, but are unable (or unwilling) to record the details of the users accessing the site. The list of sites has been put together by industry expert on combating childabuse images, the IWF (Internet Watch Foundation).
Many other ISP’s in the UK are expected to follow suit in blocking illegal sites in the first censorship act of control on the internet in the Democratic West, but many campaigners in both child protection agency's and charities feel this is a necessary step.
