Spammer jailed for sending 825 million emails
Sunday, May 30, 2004 at 10:58 by Rich Kavanagh
Howard Carmack is to spend the next three and a half years in jail.

Last month, Howard Carmack, otherwise known as the "Buffalo Spammer", was charged with 14 counts of identity theft and forgery. He then used the stolen identities to send an incredible 825 million unsolicited e-mails.

Accused of operating from 343 different e-mail accounts between January 2002 and May 2003, Carmack is responsible for hundreds of millions of junk e-mails offering products such as "herbal stimulants" and "get-rich-quick" schemes.

Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant for Sophos said,

"Hopefully this sentence will send a strong message to other spammers, and they will reconsider whether launching a tidal wave of unsolicited junk mail is really worth it. Unfortunately whenever one spammer stops another seems to take their place. Since Carmack was arrested we have seen a dramatic increase in the amount of spam received by computer users worldwide."

Internet Service Provider (ISP) Earthlink won a $16.4 million judgement against Cormack last year and assisted the authorities with the prosecution case.
