An 18 year old youth from Bridgend in Wales has been jailed for six months after a silly text message prank in a nightclub horribly back-fired.
The incident occurred when Ryan Jenkins was out clubbing with his friends in the Creation nightclub. A large screen in the club displays text messages sent in by clubbers and the misguided youth attempted to send a message stating: "There is a bomb in the building and you are all going to die."
Fortunately the message was screened by staff at the club, but unfortunately for Jenkins, the staff reported the matter to the police who traced the number back to the hapless Jenkins who was promptly arrested.
Jenkins pleaded guilty to communicating false information with intent at Cardiff Crown Court and his own defence admitted that he was guilty of "crass stupidity" but citing mitigating circumstances on the fact that he was "in a rather drunken condition."
Despite this the trainee electrician was jailed for 6 months in a young offenders insitute by Judge Neil Bidder QC who said:
"That message, had it gone on to the screen, could have caused panic in the club. It is essential that sentences are imposed for offences such as this that will deter other people from sending such messages whatever their motives."
Six months may seem a harsh sentence, but is perfectly understandable given the current high state of terror alerts and such pranks cannot be taken lightly.
