Microsoft to release cutdown Longhorn in 2006
Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at 11:06 by Andy Holliday
Microsoft have announced that they are aiming to release the next version of Windows - codenamed Longhorn - in the first half of 2006.

This release date means that some of the more complex features may have to be cut down somewhat although some major new technologies such as a new file system called WinFS, a new graphics system currently codenamed Avalon and a new web services architecture known as Indigo will be included.

Microsoft would not say which features are to be left out but were keen to stress that such cutbacks are typical of Windows releases.

Work on Longhorn slowed down after Microsoft decided to utilise its programmers to complete Windows XP Service Pack 2 which is due for release shortly.
