OD2, Europe's top provider of digital music services, has announced that in the first quarter of 2004 there were over 1 million downloads of digital music through it's music distribution channels.
OD2, who license their music download service to stores such as mycokemusic.com and HMV, also announced a first quarter turnover of in excess of one million pounds.
In comparison to Apple's iTunes service, who by the end of last year[/url had sold 25 million songs through their download service, a figure of 1 million songs downloaded may not seem much. Even in comparison to Napster, whose four month figure of five million songs was recently reported on, the million songs in a quarter may not seem substantial, particularly for a company which represents 21 music download services across Europe.
However, the figures do show that the popularity of legal music sharing services is rapidly increasing, with more customers obviously willing to use these services if they are available, rather than obtaining their music through less legit channels of distribution.
Whether or not OD2 manages to rival it's more popular peers iTunes and Napster is something we'll keep an eye on.
One thing we can be sure of is that legitimate digital music downloading is here to stay.
