More Nintendo DS (or Nitro?) specs leaked
Saturday, March 13, 2004 at 10:04 by Rich Kavanagh
We reported back in January about Nintendo's plans to release a dual screen hand held console, called aptly, the Nintendo DS (Dual Screen).

Well since then, they've unofficially changed the name of it to Nintendo Nitro.

Today we're also able to reveal some product specifications that have been leaked.

Some of the more notable features are:

  • 4MB RAM
  • Dual processors
  • 656KB Video RAM
  • Touch sensitive screen
  • 256x192 Pixels (per screen)
  • 120,000 Polygons per second
  • 802.11b Wireless networking

The dual processors are going to be an ARM7 @ 33MHz and an ARM9 @ 67MHz. The Gameboy Advance only runs at 16.8MHz, so you can see how much of a vast improvement this will be.

The ARM7 is also believed to be used for backwards compatibility, meaning owners of Gameboy Advance games can still play them on the new console.

We're looking forward to seeing what the wireless connectivity is capable of. The leaked document suggests up to sixteen players across a distance of 100m (ten times further than the Nokia N-Gage).
