| New .mob domain applied for |
| Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at 17:40 by Rich Kavanagh |
Nine firms have applied to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in a bid to register a new Top Level Domain (TLD).
It's suspected the new TLD will be .mob and will be used to strictly specify a mobile based web site.
We currently have two mobile versions of our own website, one is for PDA's and the other is for WAP based mobile phones.
Some of the nine firms who have applied to ICANN are Microsoft, Nokia, HP, Orange, Samsung and a couple more.
We'll let you know if they are successful or not.

| Is it just me that thinks this is COMPLETELY pointless ?
We have http://pda.itvibe.com and http://wap.itvibe.com to specify our different formatted sites.
What next, a .xml top level domain for XML feeds ?

| I thought it was going to be one for the crime families of this world...
www.mafia.mob anyone ;) |

|
| Haha, thats exactly what I thought Craig. www.therussian.mob :)
Or for cataonia fans, www.iamthe.mob :)
But yes its complety pointless, a would be a totaly missus of a TLD, everything a company runs in any format should be a sub domain of their domain. like what is already being done. using TLDs to seperate sections and formats is totaly sturctureless.
mycars.com
|-mob.mycars.com - moblie site
|-xml.mycars.com - xml site
|- rss.xml.mycars.com - rss spesfic xml site
Etc..
I my opinion, there should only be country top level domains.
.uk .us .de .fr etc. with .com being international and everyhing should steam off that ie: gov.uk mil.uk gov.fr mil.de etc..
Problem is the set up of domains on the internet was never thought though and now its a totaly mess, beyound redemption. |

| I had an arguement with my girlfriend this morning about this sort of thing, I was saying that the internet should NOT be split in country domains but other organisational units (like the .museum section) as a top level domains, mainly beacuse you end up with ibm.co.uk, ibm.com, ibm.co.it etc. etc. which I argue would again be missing the point of TLD's (as shadow suggests for the .mob domain)!
I do agree though that the internet naming structure may well be beyond redemption, but I think it's as good as we're going to get.
My girlfreind was arguing that although there was no concept of place (i.e countries) on the internet (as it's accessible from everywhere) there was still a concept of space, which is an interesting point, but I'm not sure if it had any relevance to the arguement or if she was just trying to throw me off track.
