It's a game that has caused mass outrage in many sectors of the media and has also caused it's creators, Rockstar Games, to be taken to court over racist comments in the game.
It's won many industry awards, including the Ultimate Game of the Year Award at the Golden Joysticks. Has sold over 30 million copies of the Grand Theft Auto series to date, including over 11.5 million copies of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
So with a reputation like this where could the series go next?
Rockstar Games has announced Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is to be the next game to carry the flag.
Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games, said:
"In the past couple of years, we have put an enormous amount of pressure on ourselves to ensure we do everything possible to exceed people's expectations with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,"
"Even though we still have eight months to go, we are starting to become very proud of what we have achieved and we can’t wait to get the game into players' hands."
Yes, you heard him right, they aim to have the completed game in players hands by October 19, 2004 in North America and in Europe on October 22, 2004.
Leslie Benzies, President of Rockstar North, added,
"We are extremely humbled by the success of the Grand Theft Auto series and it has made us push ourselves further than ever to create a title in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that will hopefully redefine the Grand Theft Auto series and revolutionize open-ended gameplay and video game production values."
It all sounds very promising, with improvements in gameplay that will give players more freedom than in previous titles in the series is sure to delight fans.
The game will be initially released on the PS2 exclusively versions unconfirmed at the moment.
