Netsky virus continues to spread rapidly
Monday, March 01, 2004 at 18:28 by Rich Kavanagh
Anti-virus vendor Sophos are warning users to be on the lookout for variants of the Netsky virus that we reported on last week.

Researchers have detected two new variants, today alone.

Netsky-D and Netsky-E are both worm based viruses and are not to be messed with.

The Netsky-D worm arrives in an email using a variety of subject names and the attached file names can include:

  • all_document.pif
  • application.pif
  • document.pif
  • your_letter.pif
  • your_product.pif

Senior Technology Consultant for Sophos, Graham Cluley said,

"Many users who are wary of EXE, SCR and VBS files which arrive in their email may not realise that PIF files are equally capable of being malicious. All users should be wary of any unsolicited email attachment which arrives in their inbox. Ideally, all businesses would proactively filter executable content at the gateway, so it cannot reach tempted users."

Graham Cluley continued,

"Whoever is behind the Netsky worms is hell bent on causing as much chaos as possible. They have deliberately released new versions of their virus, tweaked to try and avoid detection by anti-virus software. Computer users should heed the warning and be wary of any unsolicited email attachment."

As ever, we urge you to ensure your anti-virus software is upto date at all times.
