MyDoom-F worm threat spreads
Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at 14:34 by Laurence Norah
F-Secure are warning that the number of machines infected with the F variant of the MyDoom virus is increasing, and are warning users that this worm contains a destructive payload which has the potential to delete pictures, movies and Microsoft Office documents from the users hard drive.

First spotted in the wild on the 20th of February 2004, the virus targets both Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com and the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) at http://www.riaa.com using a Distributed Denial of Service attack.

This is the first known variant of the worm which attempts to delete data, and is therefore potentially much more destructive to end users than the previous variants.

The virus is spread via e-mail attachment so our advice is to ensure you have the latest virus updates installed for your particular anti-virus software, and don't open any attachments unless you are 100 percent certain you are sure they are safe.
