CEO fined $65,000 for illegal software
Friday, February 13, 2004 at 14:26 by Rich Kavanagh
Tucson based firm CEO Software have agreed to pay $65,000 dollars to the Business Software Alliance (BSA).

The BSA is the voice of the world's commercial software industry and they educate consumers on software management and copyright protection, cyber security, trade, e-commerce and other Internet-related issues.

After receiving a report, BSA's attorneys contacted CEO Software. The company co-operated with BSA and voluntarily conducted a self-audit.

As a result of this audit, CEO Software were found to have more copies of software programs on its computers than it had licenses to support.

The firm were ordered to pay some $65,000 dollars in settlement and have agreed to delete any unlicensed copies of software, purchase replacement software and strengthen its software management practices.

Bob Kruger, Vice President of Enforcement for BSA said,

"Software publishers lose billions of dollars each year because organizations install unlicensed software on office computers. Companies can help prevent this problem by establishing sound software asset management practices."

Firms concerned or in doubt about their own licensing are recommended to visit the BSA website where they can download free software auditing tools.
