Lookout, people are still Phishing
Friday, January 16, 2004 at 15:38 by Rich Kavanagh
Looks like people are still Phishing for your credit card and bank details.

Sophos Anti-Virus have warned users of the latest in what is becoming a long line of social engineering type scams. This type of social engineering virus or scam, attempts to gain your bank details, usually by presenting you with a form that looks identical to a popular bank's website.

The latest social engineering virus to be let loose however gets a little help from another recent virus.

Called Mmdload-A, this new virus attempts to download the MiMail-N virus from a website hosted in Russia and if successful, uses the virus against you.

Carole Theriault, Security Consultant at Sophos said,

"This is the latest Trojan 'phishing' for personal financial data. The malicious coders know that not everyone who receives the email will be a PayPal customer, but similar to the mindset of spammers, if only a few people fall for the ruse, there is an opportunity to drain bank accounts. Best practice for business should include automatic blocking of all executable code at the email gateway. Reputable companies do not send out files in this way, and users should think twice before they click on unsolicited email messages."

The Mmdload-A virus will arrive as a zip file containing an executable file called PAYPAL.exe.
