Netcraft launch anti-phishing service
Friday, January 02, 2004 at 21:02 by Rich Kavanagh
Netcraft, the internet technology tracking firm based in the UK, have announced an anti-phishing service.

As we reported last month, Phishing is the name for a relatively new phenomenon, so named because fraudsters try to lure unwitting people into divulging their personal (and usually bank) details.

The service has been developed for banks and other financial organisations to track occurrences of their name, brands, trademarks and slogans on the Internet.

A quote in the Netcraft press release says,

"The service helps companies identify sites which may be trying to construct frauds, identity theft and phishing attacks by pretending to be the bank, or are implying that the site has a relationship with the bank when in fact there is none."

Netcraft have domain and host names for over 46 million web sites and front page content for 20 million and can check each of them for the occurrence of the bank's domains, trademarks and commonly used phrases.
