Alcos get fined $75,000 for illegal software
Sunday, November 16, 2003 at 21:56 by Rich Kavanagh
Insurance specialists Alcos have been fined $75,000 by the Business Software Alliance.

The Business Software Alliance (BSA), a watchdog group representing the world's leading software manufacturers, presented the bill to Alcos after they conducted a self-audit and were found to be severely lacking in licenses for Adobe, Apple, Macromedia, Microsoft and Symantec products.

Alcos also agreed to delete all unlicensed software and to purchase replacement software.

President of Alcos, Eugene LoVasco said,

"Alcos took steps to improve its software management procedures. We will work to ensure that all employees understand their obligation to comply with the copyright laws."

The BSA recently contacted Alcos who co-operated with the BSA and voluntarily conducted a self-audit.

Bob Kruger, Vice President for Enforcement for the BSA said,

"Failure to address software licensing proactively can lead to copyright infringement, which can lead to fines. Companies should ensure that all of the software programs installed on their computers is fully licensed."

Firms concerned or in doubt about their own licensing are recommended to visit the BSA website where they can download free software auditing tools.
